Indonesia has banned a list of popular western songs in their country due to the nature of them being ‘pornographic’ and ‘obscene’. What they mean by this, is the lyrics are too explicit. Songs like Ariana Grande’s “Love Me Harder” and Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” have fallen victim to this category, among a list of others.
“Love Me Harder” includes lyrics like:
“I’ll take the pleasure, take it with the pain” and “Just a little bit harder, harder, a little bit”.
They may want to protect their children from lyrics like this, perhaps.
Ed Sheeran’s “Shape Of You” includes these lyrics:
“Grab on my waist and put that body on me” or “Leave and get in a taxi, then kiss in the backseat”
Both are definitely indicative of sexual encounters, but are done cleverly, as to not break that boundary. However Indonesia disagrees, and have banned these songs, as well as this list below:
- “Dusk Till Dawn” – ZAYN
- “Sangria Wine” – Camila Cabello, Pharrell Williams
- “Mr. Brightside” – The Killers
- “Let Me” – ZAYN
- “Love Me Harder” – Ariana Grande, The Weeknd
- “Plot Twist” – Sigrid
- “Shape of You” – Ed Sheeran
- “Makes Me Wonder” – Maroon 5
- “That’s What I Like” – Bruno Mars
- “Fuck it, Don’t Want You Back” – Eamon
- “Bad Things” – Camila Cabello, MGK
- “Versace On The Floor” – Bruno Mars
- “Midsummer Madness” – AUGUST 08, 88rising
- “Wild Thoughts” – Rihanna
- “Till it Hurts” – Yellow Claw
- “Your Song” – Elton John
- “Overdose” – Agnes Monica
Banned during the daytime, these songs can only be played after 10pm and before 3am. What are your thoughts on these songs? Do you agree with Indonesia’s decision to ban them?
