Netflix has acquired an as-yet-untitled spy series set to star Arnold Schwarzenegger. It will mark the first time the actor will appear as a regular on a scripted television series.
Schwarzenegger will star alongside Monica Barbaro (Top Gun: Maverick) as a father-daughter duo caught in a web of secret global intrigue. Nick Santora, who previously created CBS drama Scorpion and will serve as showrunner on the upcoming Jack Reacher show at Amazon, has created the series and will also produce.
Unfortunately there’s not much premise to go on, but Schwarzenegger doing a TV spy show is certainly significant, and still feels kind of weird. The idea of one of the biggest box office draws of the latter decades of the 20th century starring in a TV series would have been unthinkable not too long ago; now it’s just another headline thanks to streaming and the advent of “prestige” television.
There used to be a stigma, that “TV actors” were considered inferior and simply light entertainers, while “movie actors” were the real deal. That distinction is clearly a thing of the past. Expect the show to be a big hit simply because people like Schwarzenegger, and getting to binge eight hours of him is a treat no one’s really been able to indulge in outside of movie marathons.
Schwarzenegger was last seen in 2019’s Terminator: Dark Fate, and his only other film role currently listed is him playing The President in Kung Fury 2, the sequel to the comedic 2015 31-minute martial arts homage.
