Artwork Depicting MPs As Chimpanzees Might Be The Most Expensive Banksy Ever Sold | Arts

The most discussed anonymous artist Banksy has put up the painting Devolved Parliament for auction. The value of this work of art is impossible to define, but according to the auctioneer Sotheby’s, it could reach more than £1.5 million.

Banksy is well known for his political-themed artworks and for the powerful meaning they have: Devolved Parliament was painted in 2009, but it has never been as current as now. It depicts the House of Commons full of chimpanzees. The artist from Bristol presented it for the first time with a clear message: “Laugh now, but one day we’ll be in charge“.

As Branczik, the European head of contemporary art at Sotheby’s said “Regardless of where you sit in the Brexit debate, there’s no doubt that this work is more pertinent now than it has ever been, capturing unprecedented levels of political chaos and confirming Banksy as the satirical polemicist of our time“.

The Devolved Parliament will be exhibited on September 28 before its sale on October 3, a year after the destruction of one of Banksy’s most important works of art, Girl with a balloon. It is also not a coincidence that the exhibition to be held in the London galleries was organized a few weeks before the scheduled deadline for the Brexit.
