‘Bad Trip’ Director Kitao Sakurai To Helm ’72 Hours’ For Sony From ‘Cobra Kai’ Creators

Bad Trip director Kitao Sakurai has been hired to helm 72 Hours for Sony Pictures.

Cobra Kai creators Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg and Josh Heald are reportedly working on the film, while John Davis is producing through his Davis Entertainment banner. Hurwitz and Schlossberg have written the original screenplay for the film, with rewrites by Nicholas Thomas.

Plot details are under wraps right now, but Sakurai’s involvement hints at something original and hilarious. Bad Trip was one of the most outrageous comedies of the last decade, and Sakurai previously teamed up with that film’s star Eric Andre on The Eric Andre Show for Adult Swim, which itself is an acclaimed parody of talk shows and a great example of anti-comedy.

Sakurai also recently directed episodes from season two of Dave and B.J. Novak‘s series Platform on FX, so he’s a rising star in the industry.

Aside from their Cobra Kai work, Hurwitz and Schlossberg also have plenty of experience in the comedy world, having previously worked on Blockers, American Reunion, and the Harold and Kumar series.

So there’s plenty of reason to think that 72 Hours, even though right now we know nothing about it, is worth getting excited about for comedy fans.

Other projects Davis Entertainment are working on include a Predator origin movie for 20th Century Studios and Hulu, a film based on the bestselling series The Uglies starring Joey King, and the Zachary Levi-led Harold And The Purple Canyon.
