The Tudors with more courtly intrigue and decorum, and far less sex. The BBC’s lavish period drama Versailles got off to a good start last night drawing nearly 2 million viewers last night, and very surprisingly only a handful of complaints.

Said to be the sexiest TV drama ever made, and one of the most expensive French TV series ever made, Versailles is the story of the Sun King Louis XIV and for all its advertised raunchiness the series was surprisingly refreshing in its variety of sex scenes and portrayal of the intricacies of the French court.

I will certainly be watching – it’s so good.
