Actor James Noble, best known for playing Governor Eugene Gatling on the television show Benson, has died at the age of 94. Noble is seen here in an interview with CNN in 1981.

 

Benson star James Noble has died at the age of 94, the prolific stage and screen actor passing away in Conneticut on Monday as a result of stroke according to the New York Times, the actor appearing as US founding father John Hancock in the musical 1776, taking on the role of Reverend John Witherspoon in the film adaption.

 

However it was as bumbling Governor Eugene Gatling in the sitcom Benson that made him a household name in the 1980s. Noble is survived by his daughter Katherine Noble Cowan, his wife Carolyn Coates passing away in 2005.
