Expect to see plenty more sweeping romances on the big screen, as best-selling author Nicholas Sparks has inked a deal with Universal and Anonymous Content that will see three more of his novels get film adaptations.
Sparks is the source material behind films such as The Notebook, Dear John, The Lucky One, The Choice, and many more.
This new deal will see his recent 2021 bestseller The Wish become the first adaptation. The novel revolves around a couple who meet and fall in love for the first time in the late 90s, but separate and only reconnect two decades later.
Sparks said in a statement: “An author could not ask for better producing partners than Anonymous Content, whose taste and history of making award-winning film and television are undisputed.”
It’s a slightly curious move, only because Anonymous Content is a production company usually associated with political thrillers and dark dramas. They’re behind films such as Spotlight, Winter’s Bone, and Boy Erased, so making this deal with Sparks perhaps signals a change in strategy.
Until recently, Sparks adaptations were pretty much a can’t-miss proposition. Seven of the first eight films based on his work made over $84 million at the box office, spanning from 1998 to 2013. But the last three adaptations have struggled, with The Best Of Me and The Choice struggling to break even. Universal will be hoping this isn’t a sign of things to come.
It’s unclear right now which other Sparks novels will be adapted as a part of this deal, but he does have another book arriving in September – Dreamland. So it’s possible that is next in line.
