Billie Eilish has ended Lil Nas X’s historic 19-week run at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. “Bad Guy”, the singer’s biggest hit to date, has moved from No. 2 on the list to No. 1, finally toppling Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road”. The viral country rap remix featuring Billy Ray Cyrus broke the record for the longest time at the top of the big US singles chart in July.
“Bad Guy” became the first US No. 1 for Eilish, who rose to fame shortly after the release of her debut album When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go. Last month, the 17-year-old singer shared a new version of “Bad Guy” with a verse from her idol Justin Bieber.
Both Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus congratulated the young artist on her success. Nas tweeted: “Congratulations to Billie Eilish!! U deserve this!!”, and Cyrus added: “Congratulations @billieeilish. Well deserved. Your persistence paid off. Thanks everybody. It was a hell of a ride”.
If “Old Town Road” returns to its peak position, it will renew its record for the most weeks spent atop the Billboard chart. It will also become the first single in the US history to reign at the charts’ summit for 20 weeks.
