Billie Piper To Star In Adaptation Of Terri White Memoir ‘Coming Undone’ For Netflix

Billie Piper is following up her successful starring role in I Hate Suzie with another lead role in a series, this time for Netflix. The actress is set to star in an adaptation of Coming Undone, the memoir written by Empire Magazine’s former editor-in-chief Terri White, which chronicles the writer’s struggles with her own mental health.

Stemming from childhood traumas, White would eventually end up in a psychiatric ward following a mental and emotional breakdown. The book has been praised for its vulnerable look at how childhood abuse and trauma can affect even those who seemingly have it all. White will adapt the project herself. Bad Wolf will produce, with Piper also serving as an executive producer.

Piper’s career is unique, as she began as a pop star and quickly snagged a UK number one at just age 15 with single ‘Because We Want To.’ She released a best-selling follow-up album before leaving the music industry entirely and pursuing a career in acting. She’d soon join the cast of Doctor Who, before going on to star in Secret Diary Of A Call Girl and Penny Dreadful.

She also appeared in 2018’s four-part thriller series Collateral, which earned her a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actress, before starring in the aforementioned I Hate Suzie, which was released to critical acclaim and earned her another BAFTA nomination, this time for Best Actress.

It’s easy to see how Piper’s work on I Hate Suzie – which focuses on the eight stages of trauma – helped land her this role, as Coming Undone will likely cover similar ground. While the show will likely be difficult to watch in places, it should also be emotionally riveting and hopefully inspirational for those suffering from similar mental health struggles as White has.

A second season of I Hate Suzie is due out sometime this year, while Piper will also be seen in Lena Dunham‘s medieval comedy Catherine, Called Birdy, which is currently in post-production.
