A standalone Black Canary movie is reportedly in the works at HBO Max. Jurnee Smollett will reprise her role as Dinah Lance – aka Black Canary – who was first introduced in Birds Of Prey last year.
Misha Green (Sons Of Anarchy, Heroes, Lovecraft Country) is writing the script. Sue Kroll will produce the film under her Kroll & Co. Entertainment banner, having also produced Birds Of Prey.
Black Canary was depicted as a burlesque singer who rescues Harley Quinn from an attempted abduction before becoming the driver for crime lord Roman Sionis in last year’s film, one of the last blockbusters to arrive before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Green and Smollett previously indicated that they’d love to further explore the character while doing press for Lovecraft Country.
Green may also end up directing, but right now she’s only on board to pen the screenplay. It may be a while before she can focus on Black Canary though, as she’s also attached to direct Tomb Raider 2, and is writing Jennifer Lopez‘s action thriller The Mother for Netflix.
Unsurprisingly, this is far from the only superhero movie HBO Max has in development. They’re also working on a Batgirl film starring Leslie Grace and Blue Beetle with Xolo Maridueña. The streaming platform is also developing a Black Superman series alongside producer Michael B. Jordan.
Smollett will next be seen in a pair of movies for HBO Max rival, Netflix. One is Escape From Spiderhead, which also stars Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller, and the other is thriller Lou, which pairs her with Allison Janney.
