Black Mask Will Be The Villain In ‘Birds Of Prey’ | Film News

While the rest of the DCEU is in flux, with movies and series being announced left and right, director Cathy Yan‘s Birds Of Prey seems to be chugging along nicely. In fact, per The Wrap, the film now has an antagonist: long-time Batman nemesis Roman Sionis, better known as Black Mask.

The character is a crime lord who first appeared in the pages of Batman #386, written by Doug Moench and drawn by Tom Mandrake. Born into one of the richest families in Gotham City, Sionis eventually took over his parents’ business and ran it into the ground, after murdering both of them in a fire, of course. Did you expect some sort of normal upbringing for a supervillain?

Following that, Sionis took on a life a crime and the persona of Black Mask. In some iterations, the headgear he wears is crafted from his father’s casket, while in others the mask has actually melted onto his face. Either way, that’s certainly evil enough to be the lead of a major DC movie.

Margot Robbie has already been confirmed to reprise her role as Harley Quinn for the film, while we know that Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain are all set to appear. Christina Hodson – also penning Batgirl – is writing the script, and Birds Of Prey is eyeing a 2020 release date. It’s quickly becoming the most-anticipated DC release.
