The Hollywood Reporter has reported that Warner Bros. and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment have joined forces and are set to adapt the newly released Australian YA science fiction novel Illuminae. Before you shrug this of as another Hunger Games/Divergent-esque novel be aware that this is something entirely different. The book was released back in October and was quick to garner glowing reviews. It has been praised for it’s unique style and unusual narrative structure and has been described as a “a truly interactive experience. . . . A fantastically fun ride”.
Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents—including emails, maps, files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, the novel tells the story of a teenager hacker and her pilot ex-boyfriend who unearth a major conspiracy and contend with deadly viruses and an interstellar war. All this whilst coping with their crumbling relationship. Sounds intense.
This won’t be the first time Pitt has been involved in a big screen adaptation, he produced and starred in the 2013 adaptation of Max Brook’s apocalyptic horror novel World War Z . Pitt will produce alongside Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner whilst Jesse Ehrman and Julia Spiro will be overseeing the project for the studio. Now that they have the rights, it will be exciting to see how they bring this intriguing and highly acclaimed novel to life.
