California Duo Big Leaf Share New Track ‘New Clear Vision’

Curtis James and Joshua Griego form the new musical duo Big Leaf as Muunjuun and J Greegs, respectively. Hailing from Ventura, California, the longtime friends have been collaborating musically and performing in various ensembles for about 20 years.

Their diverse influences include jazz, soul, funk, R&B, hip-hop, classical, and experimental music. After gaining performance experience in Southern Californian communities near Ventura, Santa Barbara, and Los Angeles, they moved to Sonoma County, just north of San Francisco, around eight years ago. Big Leaf was established in the summer of 2022 when they decided to jointly produce an album.

Big Leaf’s uplifting single, “New Clear Vision,” showcases a groovy bass line, a sultry electric piano chord progression, and dynamic drumming. The song celebrates the power of a supportive friend in times of self-doubt, presented as a conversation between two friends: one who believes in their friend and the other who needs encouragement.

Big Leaf’s sound is difficult to pigeonhole into a single genre, as their style varies from track to track while maintaining a unique sound. Many of their songs feature playful, jazzy melodies sung over funky bass lines and lively drum beats.

As multi-instrumentalists, Curtis and Joshua recorded nearly all of the instruments in Curtis’ Sebastopol home studio. The talented Gabe Katz contributes drumming on several tracks on their upcoming album.
