Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan have signed on to star in a film as Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, respectively.
They are the New York Times reporters who first wrote a series of articles that exposed Harvey Weinstein as a predatory monster, before penning bestselling book She Said: Breaking The Sexual Harassment Story That Helped Ignite A Movement about the entire experience.
The film, titled She Said and in the works at Universal, will be helmed by Maria Schrader (Unorthodox) and written by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Ida).
The book was originally optioned in 2018 by Megan Ellison‘s Annapurna Pictures and Brad Pitt‘s Plan B Entertainment, but financial difficulties forced Ellison to pull back spending, prompting the company to partner with Universal on the project.
Pitt will produce alongside his Plan B partners Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner, while Ellison will executive produce alongside Sue Naegle.
Although the film centers around Weinstein, the film will reportedly be more in the vein of journalism dramas such as All The President’s Men and Spotlight, following a team of female journalists who persevered through Weinstein’s threats of litigation and intimidation in order to break the story, which sparked the #MeToo movement that now extents far beyond Hollywood.
This is obviously a timely subject and incredibly relevant to Hollywood, so it was only a matter of time until She Said made its way to the big screen. Hopefully the film can do justice to Twohey and Kantor’s hard work, plus the brave victims who came forward. With a pool of hugely talented women working on the project, there’s a good chance this is a major awards contender down the line.
Mulligan and Kazan haven’t shared the screen before, but they have worked together. They previously co-starred in a Broadway production of The Seagull, and Mulligan starred alongside Jake Gyllenhaal in the drama Wildlife, which Kazan co-produced and wrote alongside her husband Paul Dano, but this will be their first time on screen together.
Mulligan is coming off an Oscar-nominated performance in another #MeToo-related film, the revenge drama Promising Young Woman. She’s currently filming Netflix movie Spaceman alongside Adam Sandler, and she’ll star alongside Bradley Cooper in the Leonard Bernstein biopic, Maestro.
Kazan recently starred in HBO’s miniseries The Plot Against America, and she’ll next be seen starring in a Netflix miniseries titled Clickbait. She has also lent her voice to the upcoming animated film Cryptozoo, which arrives in August.
Production on She Said is slated to begin this summer.
