Christina Applegate is set to return to TV as she has signed on to star in Netflix’s new half-hour dark comedy series, Dead To Me. This is reportedly seen as a big coup by figures within the industry, as Applegate is a perennial choice for TV casting directors and is offered multiple TV series and pilots a year, but remains very selective. This will be her first TV series in six years.
Liz Feldman has penned the series which has been described as a comedic Big Little Lies. It revolves around a powerful friendship that blossoms between a tightly wound widow and a free spirit with a shocking secret.
Applegate will play the widow, Jen, who has a dark sense of humour and an anger problem she doesn’t necessarily want to deal with, who has been trying to keep it together since her husband was killed in a hit and run a few months prior.
Feldman will also serve as showrunner, while Will Ferrell and Adam McKay – frequent collaborators with Applegate thanks to the Anchorman films – will produce through their Gloria Sanchez Productions, along with Jessica Elbaum and Applegate herself.
Applegate originally broke out as a star on Married…With Children, so this marks somewhat of a return to her origins. Netflix would love this series to have the kind of impact that one had. Filming is scheduled to begin this autumn in Los Angeles.
