Amazon Studios and 3AD are teaming up to develop a feature film titled This Is Always, which has Daniel Dae Kim in talks to star and Mina Shum writing and directing.
The film will be based on successful Japanese television show Pure Soul, which follows two forty-somethings who feel perfectly content living their lives free of commitment, until they meet one another. But when an unforeseen incident turns their lives upside down, can they still be perfect for each other?
Kim and John Cheng will produce via 3AD, while Shum will executive producer. Motoko Kimura, the creator of the original show, is also on board as a producer.
Kim has already appeared in Netflix’s impressive sci-fi film Stowaway and animated movie Raya And The Last Dragon this year. He’s also signed on to star in the second season of National Geographic’s timely anthology series, The Hot Zone.
Shum has written and directed five films which have been festival staples. Her debut Double Happiness starring Sandra Oh won Best First Feature at the Berlin Film Festival, while her recent film, Meditation Park, was acquired by Netflix.
3AD was established by Kim to produce premier content for TV, film and digital media, with a commitment to storytelling that features characters and cultures traditionally underrepresented. Hopefully This Is Always can be as successful as their most popular product, The Good Doctor. The company has a first-look deal with Amazon.
