Dave Bautista Returning For ‘My Spy’ Sequel At Amazon

Amazon Prime Video is working on a sequel to 2020 family comedy My Spy, and has secured the return of Dave Bautista, who starred in the first film.

Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong will also return, while Anna Faris and Craig Robinson have joined the cast. The sequel will be titled My Spy: The Eternal City.

The first film was an action-comedy from STXfilms that Prime Video picked up for release during the theatrical shutdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. It revolves around JJ, a hardened CIA operative who finds himself at the mercy of precocious nine-year-old Sophie, after being sent undercover to surveil her family.

The film was written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber and directed by Peter Segal. It surprisingly broke out as one of the unexpected successes of 2020, becoming the third most-watched film on SVOD according to ScreenEngine, after Disney+’s Hamilton and another Prime Video release, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm. So it’s easy to see why Amazon is interested in making a sequel.

This follow-up will reportedly revolve around a now-teenage Sophie who convinces JJ to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy, where they both unwittingly end up as pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA Chief David Kim and his son Collin — who also happens to be Sophie’s best friend.

The Hoebers are returning to write the script, while Segal will once again direct. Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon and MGM Studios, said in a statement:

“We were so delighted with the success of My Spy. It is an absolute privilege to reunite with Pete Segal, Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, and the rest of the talented cast and filmmakers–along with some very exciting additions. With the sequel, our Prime Video customers are in store for another dynamic story, complete with twists, hilarious performances, and even a little romance.”

Bautista has broken out as an actor willing to take on a variety of roles since his retirement from the wrestling ring. In late 2022 he appeared in Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery on Netflix and has already starred in M. Night Shyamalan‘s Knock At The Cabin this year.

He’s currently working on Brittany Snow‘s Parachute, and Guardians of the Galaxy and Dune sequels.

Coleman was just seen in Avatar: The Way of Water and will next appear in Sony sci-fi thriller 65, which will star Adam Driver.

Faris was recently seen in black comedy The Estate, Robinson just wrapped production on the second season of Killing It, Schaal continues to voice multiple roles on Bob’s Burgers, and Jeong can soon be seen in Charlie Day‘s directorial debut, Fool’s Paradise.

The My Spy sequel is expected to head into production within the next few weeks.
