Disney has released the first teaser trailer for the highly-anticipated Mary Poppins Returns. The film, which stars Emily Blunt as the titular character, will serve as a sequel to the 1964 classic and sees Mary Poppins coming back into the lives of the Brooks family after they suffer a loss.
Michael and Jane (Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer) are now adults, but Mary, with the help of her friend Jack (Lin-Manuel Miranda), has come to bring some joy to Michael and Jane’s three children.
This is certainly a teaser in every sense of the word, as we only get a glimpse of Blunt at the end and the clip above is more concerned in tapping into that powerful nostalgia buried within us. The film doesn’t come out until December (Christmas Day), so there’s plenty of time for a full trailer down the line.
With this, and alongside last year’s The Greatest Showman and the upcoming Mamma Mia!: Here We Go Again, we’re seeing the full effect of the success of La La Land in motion. The Greatest Showman was a surprising box office hit, and it’s probably worth a bet that Mary Poppins Returns will be another crowd-pleasing musical.
The film is directed by Rob Marshall, and also stars Meryl Streep, Colin Firth, Angela Lansbury, Julie Walters, David Warner and Dick Van Dyke.
