Disney Releases Trailer For Live Action Remake of ‘Mulan’ | Film Trailer

The trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Mulan was dropped on Thursday, in anticipation of the film’s release on March 27.

The Disney film stars Yifei Liu as the eponymous heroine, with the likes of Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li alongside her in supporting roles.

Set in a stiflingly patriarchal society, this action-packed trailer gives us a sense of the fierceness and bravery of the protagonist when she deviates away from the strict rules governing her community.

When societal expectations conflict with Mulan’s need to protect her family in the face of Northern invaders, she impersonates a man, Hua Jun. She embraces her inner strength as she is tested beyond anything she has experienced before, and realises her full potential in a journey that earns her the gratitude and respect of an entire nation.

The legendary narrative poem Ballad of Mulan, upon which this Disney adaptation is based, dates back as far as 386 AD – 557 AD. While it is unknown whether or not the character of Mulan really existed, it is assumed that the story is connected with China’s history in the 4th or 5th century AD.

At this time, China was being invaded by a nomadic ethnic group. The wars went on for more than three centuries, completely destroying the central government and affecting many parts of the Chinese Empire.

This screen adaptation is directed by Niki Caro from a screenplay by Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Elizabeth Martin and Lauren Hynek.
