Gentle giant Greg Davies and comedic icon Matt Lucas are set to travel in time this Christmas, for the BBC have confirmed that they will star in the Christmas special of Doctor Who; alongside 12th Doctor Peter Capaldi and Alex Kingston’s returning River Song.
Producers have revealed that Matt Lucas, who starred in iconic comedy sketch show Little Britain and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland will play a character called Nardole; whilst The Inbetweeners and Cuckoo star Greg Davies will play King Hydroflax. The announcement follows the revelation that Kingston’s River Song will be returning to meet her husband’s new face (and probably cause trouble for the pair).
They have also revealed what might be in store for the two newcomers: “King Hydroflax is furious, and his giant Robot bodyguard is out-of-control and coming for them all! Will Nardole survive? And when will River Song work out who the Doctor is? All will be revealed on a starliner full of galactic super-villains and a destination the Doctor has been avoiding for a very long time“.
A new synopsis of the Christmas special explains more about the return of River Song and what might be in store for herself and the Doctor: “It’s Christmas Day on a remote human colony and the Doctor is hiding from Christmas Carols and Comedy Antlers. But when a crashed spaceship calls upon the Doctor for help, he finds himself recruited into River Song’s squad and hurled into a fast and frantic chase across the galaxy”. Sadly, there’s a little wait before the Christmas special, but you can still catch the next episode for series 9 titled Heaven Sent this Saturday on BBC One at 8.05pm. See a trailer below:
