Per Variety, a spinoff to the coming-of-age comedy Easy A is in the works. Original screenwriter Bert Royal is on board to pen the spinoff and making his directorial debut. Insiders stress that the film is in very early stages of development, with Royal still in the middle of the writing process.
While Easy A is a good film, a spinoff from it, almost a decade after the initial release, is another indictment of modern Hollywood. Anything with a small amount of audience recognition and built-in IP gets a related film. Easy A doesn’t need a spinoff – it will probably be very tangentially related anyway – and Royal could have just as easily penned an original coming-of-age comedy.
But, of course, there’s less money in that.
Will Gluck directed the original 2010 film. It revolved around a clean-cut high school student who relies on the school’s rumour mill to advance her social standing. It was a surprise hit, earning $75 million worldwide and making Emma Stone a star.
Reportedly, the spinoff will be set in the same high school and explore many of the same themes as the first film. Stone is incredibly unlikely to return, obviously. $75 million was a good box office return for a small film, but Easy A has only risen in status since its original release. We’ll wait and see if this spinoff is anything other than an easy cash-grab.
