Montgomery was having an affair with Gore’s husband. She hit her neighbour with an ax 41 times. During the trial, she pleases self-defense but was finally acquitted of murder.
The series is written by Big Little Lies writer, David E. Kelley, and was inspired by John Bloom and Jim Atkinson‘s book Evidence of Love: A True Story of Passion and Death in the Suburbs as well as a series of articles published in Texas Monthly titled Love & Death in Silicon Prairie.
Love and Death will be directed by Leslie Lina Glatter, who is an Emmy nominee for her work on Homeland.
It will be produced by Lionsgate and executive produced by Kelley, through David E. Kelley Productions, Glatter, Nicole Kidman, and Per Saari – through Blossoms Films, Scott Brown and Megan Creydt – through Texas Monthly, Matthew Tinker, Michael Klick, and Helen Verno.
In a statement, HBO Max Head of Original Content, Sarah Aubrey, said: “This is a gripping story about the frustrations and desires of two women in a small town that culminates in a terrible act of violence.
We are thrilled to be partnering with David, Lesli, Nicole, and Per and incredibly fortunate to have Elizabeth at the center of our story to bring out all the layers of Candy that make this story so unforgettable“.
Lionsgate’s chairman, Kevin Biggs, added: “We cannot imagine a more perfect artist to play the leading role of Candy than Elizabeth Olsen. Her talent, charisma, and energy can bewitch audiences like no other.
We’re proud to be collaborating with a world-class creative team of Lesli, David, and Nicole on this thrilling and intriguing series and to bring another exciting premium property to our partners at HBO Max.”
Love And Death will not be the first time that this story is dramatized. In the ’90s, A Killing In A Small Town, with Barbara Hershey, was inspired by this same story.
Last December, Hulu landed Candy, which is a limited series from Universal and 20th Television. In this version, Elizabeth Moss will star as Candy Montgomery. However, Hulu didn’t share any updates since then.
