Emma Roberts and Geoffrey Rush have signed on to star in Verona Spies, an action comedy from director Frank Coraci. Roberts will play the titular Verona, a “lovable hot mess” who is accidentally hired as an escort/assassin and sent on a mission to seduce a handsome pharmaceutical executive, and charm him out of the formula for a new miracle drug.
But when she meets her charmingly handsome target, sparks fly. Instead of killing him, the two decide to team up and flee for their lives as Big Pharma and hired killers come gunning for them.
Coraci is a veteran comedy director, frequently working with Adam Sandler, having helmed such well known films as The Wedding Singer, Click, The Waterboy, and Blended.
His most recent film was 2018 Steve Coogan comedy Hot Air. In a statement, he called Verona Spies a more comedic version of True Romance, and added:
“I’m super amped to make this hilarious and action-packed flick with this amazing cast. Verona Spies is sure to be a fun and unforgettable ride.”
Luminosity Entertainment is co-financing the project and will launch world sales at the American Film Market this week. Luminosity CEO Daniel Diamond said: “Verona Spies‘ exceptional talent is perfect for this genre and in high demand in today’s marketplace both with distributors and global audiences.”
Roberts is currently filming superhero film Madame Web and also has romantic comedies Maybe I Do and Space Cadet in development. Rush’s most recent film role was 2019’s Australian drama Storm Boy, while he’s set to star as Groucho Marx in upcoming film Raised Eyebrows.
Filming on Verona Spies is expected to begin in Spring 2023.
