Per Deadline, Erin Moriarty (The Boys) and Jamie Campbell Bower (Twilight) have signed on to star in True Haunting, a horror film revolving around the true story of the first televised exorcism.
The film will be based on Edwin F. Becker‘s 2011 novel of the same name, and will chronicle the first-hand account of Ed and Marsha Becker, a young couple who move into a new home and quickly come to believe that it’s haunted. The Becker’s paranormal experience quickly became national news as their home became the location of the first-ever nationally televised exorcism.
NBC covered the event and aired it to millions across the country in 1971. As the book claims, the exorcism not only didn’t work, but actually made things for the Beckers much worse.
Gary Fleder (Kiss The Girls) will direct the film, with Richard D’Ovidio writing the script and Blair Butler revising it.
D’Ovidio has previous experience writing horror thanks to movies like Thir13en Ghosts and The Damned, while Butler previously wrote Polaroid and Hell Fest.
While most exorcism-based horror films usually tout themselves as being “based on a true story,” True Haunting at least has the distinction of actually having some truth behind it thanks to NBC’s bizarre decision in 1971. It will be interesting to see how the film not only handles the horror, but the media coverage behind the act as well.
Moriarty can next be seen in the upcoming third season of The Boys, while Bower has just joined the season four cast of Stranger Things.
True Haunting is expected to arrive sometime in 2023.
