Ethan Hawke & Pedro Pascal to Star in Pedro Almodóvar Western ‘Strange Way of Life’

Pedro Almodóvar has reportedly secured Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal for Strange Way of Life, a new western he’s working on.

Hawke and Pascal will portray a duo of middle-aged gunslingers, Jake and Silva. Silva rides across the desert to visit Sheriff Jake in Bitter Creek to have a pleasant reunion with his old friend, as over two decades prior, the men worked together as hired gunslingers. However, Jake has another secret reason that hasn’t got anything to do with reliving old memories.

The title of the film is inspired by a song by iconic Portuguese fado singer Amália Rodrigues. “Estranha Forma de Vida,” as it’s called in Portuguese, is a song that expresses feelings of anxiety, melancholy, and the uniquely Portuguese term “saudade” – which is deep emotional state of nostalgic, melancholic longing for something or someone that someone loves.

Strange Way of Life will reportedly be shot in the Tabernas desert region of Almería, Spain, which is where The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly was filmed. Almodóvar will also produce the movie alongside his brother Agustin and their production company El Deseo.

Almodóvar only made his first English-language project – short film The Human Voice starring Tilda Swinton – a few years ago. He’s currently working on his first English-language feature length film A Manual For Cleaning Women, which is based on Lucia Berlin‘s bestseller and will star Cate Blanchett.

Almodóvar has never made a western before, so this will be a totally new experience for him. But he’s frequently excelled at the many genres his eccentric work often veers off into, so he should have no trouble adapting. Filming on Strange Way of Life will begin in August.
