Ewan McGregor Joins ‘Birds Of Prey’ As Black Mask | Film News

Ewan McGregor has signed on to play the villainous Black Mask in the upcoming superhero film, Birds Of Prey. McGregor will play the Gotham mob boss – real name Roman Sionis – a gangster who dons the mask as leader of the False Face Society where a similar fashion statement is required for entry.

Few other details are available at the moment, but in the comics, Black Mask’s origin story is a darker inversion of Bruce Wayne’s own tale, involving being dropped on his head as a baby and, strangely, being bitten by a raccoon. That story has basically remained since the character’s introduction in 1985, however his mask has had myriad origins.

Sometimes it’s an ebony skull carved from his father’s casket, in others it has been burned permanently into his face after an accident, and has even possessed technology that grants him a sort of mind control over others. It will be interesting to see which route Birds Of Prey goes down, but either way it will be very fun to see McGregor embody this character.

Birds Of Prey is written by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Batgirl) and will be directed by Cathy Yan, and focuses on a group of superheroes led by Margot Robbie‘s Harley Quinn, along with Black Canary, Huntress, Cassandra Cain, and Renee Montoya.

With the fresh, new creative talent on board, and now with the McGregor addition, Birds Of Prey is quickly becoming one of the most highly anticipated superhero films. DC will be hoping it helps pull their universe out of its current slump. The film was recently confirmed to be R-Rated, and will arrive in cinemas on February 7, 2020.
