While the true terror of Tobe Hooper‘s original Texas Chainsaw Massacre came from the sheer randomness and lack of motive the man that came to be known as Leatherface reaped on some unsuspecting kids, that hasn’t stopped a prequel to the classic film from popping up.
The red band trailer for the prequel, Leatherface, has arrived, and as you’d expect, it’s bloody, gorey and has an abundance of people wearing other people’s skin. While nothing will likely ever match the sheer terror of Hooper’s original film upon release in 1974 to shocked audiences, this prequel looks set to please horror fans who like their scares with buckets of blood.
The film is written by Seth M. Sherwood and directed by Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside). Jessica Madsen, Stephen Dorff and Lili Taylor star.
While there’s been a fair few Texas Chainsaw Massacre films, thus far only Hooper’s own sequel – an offbeat, campy, very strange ride starring Dennis Hopper – has been able to provide anything memorable. Hopefully this prequel can at least remind old audiences and introduce new ones to Leatherface’s deranged ways.
In the US, the film will get an exclusive release on DirecTV on Thursday, September 21, before a limited theatrical run and full VOD release through Lionsgate on Friday, October 20.
