Apple have released the first trailer for their upcoming original series, For All Mankind. The show takes place in an alternate reality where the USSR beats the United States to the moon. This defeat spurs the U.S. to commit to space travel even more to try and find a way to go further than their rivals.
It’s an interesting idea, and although the trailer above reeks of American exceptionalism, it does capture the feeling of their desperation to get to the moon first. It was the height of the Cold War, and winning the Space Race was more than just national pride.
Of course, once America succeeded and the Cold War ended, going to the moon felt like a luxury instead, and America lost interest. For All Mankind will likely take the Space Race deeper into the 20th century, which should create a fascinating alternate reality that extents further than NASA.
Created by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica), Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, the show stars Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Wrenn Schmidt, and Shantel VanSanten. Apple TV+ details are still sparse, but For All Mankind is expected to arrive this autumn.
