The first trailer for Hulu’s upcoming period satire The Great has arrived. Tony McNamara, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of The Favourite, has penned the script, which stars Elle Fanning as Catherine the Great, the outsider who manoeuvred her way to becoming Russia’s longest-reigning leader.

Unsurprisingly, this looks very much like The Favourite. Same style, similar sets, and even the same anachronistic humour. Considering The Favourite was much loved upon release, this isn’t much of a problem, although whether The Great can hit the same heights without director Yorgos Lanthimos is another question.
It will also be interesting to see how the story works within its longer arc. Season one, according to its press release, is a “fictionalised, fun and anachronistic story of an idealistic, romantic young girl”, implying that multiple seasons are at least being considered.
That strange mix of old and new is one of the reasons The Favourite was a success, but can The Great keep up that fun across multiple episodes and/or seasons?
Alongside Fanning, the show also stars Nicholas Hoult, Phoebe Fox, and Adam Godley. The series debuts on Friday, May 15 on Hulu. In the UK, it will be broadcast on Channel 4.
