The first trailer has arrived for the six-part TV drama Waco. It will tell the story of the 1993 standoff between the FBI, ATF and notorious cult leader David Koresh‘s spiritual sect in Waco, Texas, that resulted in a deadly shootout.
Starring Taylor Kitsch as Koresh, alongside Michael Shannon, John Leguizamo, Andrea Riseborough and Rory Culkin, Waco is the latest drama to recreate a memorable yet tragic act from the 90s. While 80s nostalgia reigns supreme in other mediums, right now TV is certainly using the controversies of the 90s as fodder for riveting drama.
Following the success of shows and films such as The People v. O.J. Simpson, JonBenet and Manhunt: Unabomber, it looks to be a strategy that critics and audiences are eating up, so it will likely continue.
Waco is the first of two Koresh projects to arrive, with another one, a film, to be written by Mark Boal (Zero Dark Thirty) still in development. Will the series successfully depict and examine the tragedy of Koresh’s manipulation, or is it a cash-in project to take advantage of the latest trend in TV? Hopefully it’s the former.
