Nicolas Winding Refn is bringing his unique brand of neon-soaked violence to Amazon. The filmmaker has been working on his Los Angeles-based crime thriller series, Too Old To Die Young, for some time now, and we’ve finally got a glimpse at the dark underbelly he’s been itching thanks to the first trailer.
For anyone familiar with Refn, the trailer above is quintessentially him. Dead-of-night drama, criminal plots, and hard-nosed violence, all engulfed by a neon tinge. It looks a little like he’s mixed his last three films – Drive, Only God Forgives, The Neon Demon – together for a dark, longform sprawl through the bleaker side of Los Angeles.
Refn directed, produced, and co-wrote the series alongside Ed Brubaker. Too Old To Die Young is set to explore the criminal side of LA through various characters’ existential journeys, described as going from “killers to becoming samurais in the city of angels”. It’s unclear exactly what that means but it’s certainly intriguing.
The series stars Miles Teller, John Hawkes, Jena Malone, William Baldwin, and Carlotta Montanari. The series consists of 10 episodes, and arrives on Amazon Prime Video Friday, June 14.
