First Trailer For ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Arrives | Film Trailer

Paramount Pictures have released the trailer for the long-awaited Top Gun sequel, Top Gun: Maverick. Tom Cruise is reprising his iconic role of Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, and the film also sees the return of Val Kilmer as Iceman. Miles Teller and Set It Up star Glen Powell are also on board.

The trailer is probably catnip for Top Gun fans. The classic theme is blaring, there’s a healthy amount of cheesy, action-hero lines, and the stunts look incredible. We know Cruise is always going to go all-out stunt wise, but the shots from inside the plane look pretty mind blowing.

This is all good news, as there’s really little reason for this sequel to exist outside of an easy, nostalgic cash grab. However, the film had been in development for a while, and original director Tony Scott was even on board to direct before his untimely passing. Joseph Kosinski, having directed Cruise in Oblivion, then took over.

And of course, Cruise’s pal and now frequent collaborator, Christopher McQuarrie, has helped out with the screenplay. Although McQuarrie will probably be uncredited, this is still technically he and Cruise’s first collaboration since the incredible Mission: Impossible – Fallout. While they won’t be trying to top the intensity of that here, it will still be interesting to see how they follow it.

Hopefully Top Gun: Maverick can prove itself worthy of existing outside of pure profits. The cast is stacked. Alongside the aforementioned names, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Ed Harris are also on board. The film hits cinemas June 26, 2020.
