Jacob ‘NTHNL‘ Rudin, a renowned flutist and multi-instrumentalist, is set to release his latest album, Ontogenesis, on July 12, 2024.
This marks a significant evolution in Rudin’s career, following the success of his previous works, Cosmic Flute and Cosmic Flute Rides Again. Known for his ambient, new age, and experimental electronic music, NTHNL’s newest album promises to delve deeply into the realms of both music and science.
Ontogenesis is the third instalment in the Tranquility Studies series, a project Rudin initiated at the onset of the pandemic in 2020.
The series aims to create music that fosters peace and introspection, utilizing electronic binaural frequencies and various instruments to produce calming and poetic soundscapes. This technique, known as brainwave entrainment, uses specific frequencies to resonate with the mind, promoting relaxation and mental clarity.
Collaborating with yoga instructor and fellow musician Leslie Graves, Rudin expanded the use of binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies in Ontogenesis.
Originally conceived as ‘Music of the Body,’ the album was designed to complement yoga practices and meditative sessions. The unique approach involved Graves providing keywords related to the chakras, which Rudin then interpreted musically, progressing from the base of the body to the top and even beyond to extra-corporeal chakras.
Inspired by Erwin Schrödinger’s book What Is Life?, the album’s title, Ontogenesis, reflects the journey of life from conception to death, mirroring the progression of the chakras. This profound concept is woven throughout the album, offering listeners a deeply immersive experience.
Ontogenesis combines ambient and mystical elements with grounded binaural frequencies, making it an ideal accompaniment for yoga and meditation practices. The album’s intricate composition and production showcase NTHNL’s ability to create complex yet deceptively simple layers of music that evoke a sense of peace.
