Gemma Arterton has opened up about her experiences of being cast in both blockbusters and independent films as a woman; and she confirmed what we probably all knew: that the availability of complex, meaty roles for women is few and far between.
Although she singled out The Hunger Games franchise as an example of a lead female role in a blockbuster that an actress could really get her teeth into, on the whole, these type of films usually just offer actresses the “bit on the side” roles, according to Arterton. In comparison, Arterton prefers independent films which she notes are more “interesting“.
