With Paramount looking to expand their £3 billion-plus Transformers franchise into a multi-tiered universe with 2018’s spin-off, Bumblebee, Hailee Steinfeld is reportedly in talks to star in the film.
While very little is known about the film and plot details are being kept under wraps, Steinfeld would reportedly play “a tomboy who also holds a job as a mechanic after school.“ What we do know is that the spin-off is expected to be a lower-cost instalment and that it will be directed by Travis Knight (Kubo And The Two Strings).
It seems Paramount is attempting to do things differently with the spin-off. After having male leads Shia LaBeouf and Mark Wahlberg at the helm for their main franchise, it looks as if they’re turning to Steinfeld to give the spin-off a different feel. There was also reportedly an R-Rated, “very Quentin” script on the table at some point, so it’s clear Paramount wants to offer something different with Bumblebee.
If Steinfeld lands the gig, it would be the biggest role of her young career. While she wowed audiences in 2010’s True Grit at just 13 and has gone onto to star in such films as The Edge Of Seventeen and Pitch Perfect 2, this would be her first foray into the world of the blockbuster. Still only 20 years old, she has every chance to become a major, world-renowned star.
Bumblebee is set to open in cinemas June 8, 2018. Before that, Transformers: The Last Knight arrives soon, Friday, June 21.
