US network Showtime has announced that Sam Miller, who helmed Michaela Coel‘s acclaimed limited series I May Destroy You, has been tapped to direct another limited series, this time starring Ewan McGregor. Miller will direct A Gentleman In Moscow, an adaptation of the bestselling novel by New York Times bestselling author Amor Towles.
A Gentleman In Moscow revolves around Count Alexander Rostov, a member of Russian’s high society, who discovers that his background places him in history’s bad books. Rostov is banished to an attic in a luxurious hotel in the centre of Moscow and threatened with execution if he dares to ever leave the building again.
The show depicts the passing of time and the most turbulent years of the aftermath of the Russian Revolution, with events occurring outside Rostov’s windows. His reduced circumstances provide him entry into a much larger world of emotional discovery. As he builds a new life within the walls of the hotel, he discovers the true value of friendship, family, and love.
Miller has plenty of experience with TV, having helmed multiple episodes of Luther, Snowpiercer, and Surface. He won a BAFTA for his work on I May Destroy You, which is likely the main reason he secured this gig.
The series is written by showrunner and executive producer Ben Vanstone, and is the first series ordered to production via eOne’s new first-look deal with Tom Harper‘s Popcorn Storm Pictures. Harper is best known for his work on War and Peace and Peaky Blinders, and will also serve as an executive producer alongside McGregor, Miller, and Towles.
McGregor returned to his Obi-Wan Kenobi role in the Disney+ series of the same name earlier this year. His most recent film, Raymond and Ray, debuted on Apple TV+ in October, and he’ll next be heard lending his voice to Guillermo Del Toro‘s stop-motion version of Pinocchio, which is awaiting a Friday, December 9 streaming release by Netflix.
A Gentleman In Moscow will premiere on Showtime in the US and on Paramount+ in the UK and all international markets where the service is available. It is scheduled to be released sometime in 2023.
