IFC Films has released a new trailer for the biblical drama Mary Magdalene, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus Christ and Rooney Mara as the titular character, a week after they acquired the film’s rights. It was directed by the Oscar-nominated Garth Davis and produced by See-Saw Films’ Iain Canning and Emile Sherman (Lion, The King’s Speech).
The film was originally set to be released in March of last year by The Weinstein Company, but after the studio’s bankruptcy, the film was shelved until IFC Films acquired the U.S. distribution rights this month and set it for an April 12 release.
Mary Magdalene is an authentic and humanistic portrait of one of the most enigmatic and misunderstood spiritual figures in history. The biblical biopic tells the story of Mary, a young woman in search of a new way of living.
Constricted by the hierarchies of the day, Mary defies her traditional family to join a new social movement led by the charismatic Jesus of Nazareth. She soon finds a place for herself within the movement and at the heart of a journey that will lead to Jerusalem.
Mary Magdalene will be in theatres on April 12. Check out below the full trailer.
