Insecure star Issa Rae has signed on to write, produce and star in Perfect Strangers, a comedy for Spyglass Media. The film is an English-language adaptation of Paolo Genovese‘s 2016 Italian feature Perfetti Sconosciuti.
The plot revolves around a dinner party where a group of friends decide to play a risky game where they place their phones face-up on the table and agree to make all texts and phone calls public in an attempt to prove they have nothing to hide. It’s a comedy about friendship, love and betrayal, forcing the friends to discover themselves all over again.
If that synopsis sounds a little familiar, it’s because you may have seen it on Netflix. But not for the Italian film, but for Nothing To Hide, a French film that itself is a remake of Perfetti Sconosciuti. Obviously the premise is both funny and universal enough to warrant remakes in multiple languages.
Rae is the perfect person to have at the helm of a comedy like this. She is the writer, creator and star of HBO’s Insecure, which is currently prepping for its fourth season. She’s also got a heap of other projects in the works.
Rae will produce and likely star in an updated version the excellent 1996 crime film Set It Off, in which four women who come together after various downturns in their life rob a Los Angeles bank. She will also star alongside Lakeith Stanfield in the romantic drama The Photograph, and alongside Kumail Nanjiani in romcom The Lovebirds. She will also star alongside Laura Dern in the HBO miniseries, The Dolls. Phew!
So where Rae will actually find time for Perfect Strangers is unclear. It’s possible that one of the projects mentioned above falls by the wayside, or maybe her schedule is tightly yet intricately packed. What’s clear is that she’s becoming a star, and will very likely be a household name in a few years.
