It is a 2017 Drama/Horror/Thriller that is starring Jaeden Lieberher, Sophia Lillis, Bill Skarsgård, Finn Wolfhard, Javier Botet, Nicholas Hamilton and Megan Charpentier. It is directed by Andy Muschietti (best known for directing Mama). The synopsis for this film reads: “A group of bullied kids band together when a shapeshifting demon, taking the appearance of a clown, begins hunting children”.
I would like to start by saying that this is an extraordinary film. I was impressed by the attention to detail, the subtle but effective comedic undertone and the great cinematography. I feel that this does the original title proud and the re-imagining of the original classic can be considered even better than its predecessor. It’s a very scary film but it isn’t filled with loud, in-your-face jump scares. A lot of what makes this film scary and and a stand out in the current horror genre is the slick cinematography and elaborate shadow play. The use of lighting is done so cleverly and it contributes to the creation of atmosphere making the film experience tangibly tense.
This is a perfect movie for those who love a good horror. The young actors’ talent is top class, and if you’re a fan of Stranger Things you’ll see a familiar face in It. The cast has phenomenal chemistry, and when watching the film you really believe the relationships and friendships carry both on and off screen. Bill Skarsgård as Pennywise is terrifically creepy, showcasing his skill as actor. The only negative thing I would say about his character is that he doesn’t get the screentime he deserves. It is a mix of horror and comedy and I would say that this is not a film for the faint of heart, yet I think even those individuals would find themselves enjoying it. If not for the horror, then certainly for the comedy and camaraderie.
I think most viewers of the film would agree that this is a movie within a movie: a blend of the typical coming-of-age film and a horror film. This is a winner in my opinion. I watched this film with my brother and there were times when we were laughing and times when we got scared and could barely watch the screen. Between the unexpected shooting techniques and balance of both comedy and horror, I would give this film a 9 out of 10. It is brilliant and I could easily watch it over and over.
It is out in cinemas everywhere! Here’s a preview of what you can expect:
