James Gray To Direct ‘Ezekiel Moss’ For Focus Features

Filmmaker James Gray (The Lost City of Z, Armageddon Time) has got his next film lined up.

He is reuniting with Focus Features for Ezekiel Moss, a Depression-era ghost story about a young, imaginative boy living in a small town who befriends a mysterious drifter who may or may not have the supernatural ability to communicate with the dead.

Keith Bunin recently delivered a draft that reportedly blew both the studio and Gray away, and the director quickly committed to it. Gray and Bunin will now team to develop the full the story as they get ready for the pre-production process.

The project has been something the studio has been developing for awhile, with Philip Seymour Hoffman planning to direct prior to his tragic death in 2014. So Focus Features – and Likely Story, who are also producing – will be happy to finally enter production on a project they’ve been trying to get off the ground for years.

Gray’s last film was coming-of-age drama Armageddon Time, so he has experience with young protagonists.

His previous films also include crime thriller We Own The Night and romantic drama Two Lovers. Bunin recently penned Disney’s live action hybrid of The Aristocats, which is currently in pre-production with Questlove recently signing on to direct.
