Jessica Rothe (Happy Death Day) is replacing Samara Weaving in the upcoming fantasy action thriller Boy Kills World. Rothe will play an assassin simply named June 27, replacing Weaving, who had to drop out due to scheduling issues. The film has been described as “a one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality.”
Boy Kills World already has Bill Skarsgård on board to star, and revolves around his protagonist named Boy, a deaf-mute with a vibrant imagination. When his family is murdered, Boy escapes to the jungle and is trained by a mysterious shaman to repress his childish imagination and become an instrument of death. Mortiz Mohr will direct, with Sam Raimi producing.
“Moritz has a brilliant sense for action, humor, and world building that I just cannot wait for the world to see,” Raimi previously said about the film.
Rothe has already proven to be adept at taking strange plots and making them feel real and grounded, as she proved in the two Happy Death Day films with their Groundhog Day-structure. It’s likely that those performances got her the gig here, so producers are probably hoping for something similar.
There’s currently no release date scheduled for Boy Kills World, but production is slated to begin on Monday, February 14 in South Africa.
