Transparent creator Jill Soloway has been tapped to develop and direct a biopic about astronaut Sally Ride for Lionsgate. It will be based on an original spec script by Krystin Ver Linden that was voted to the 2018 Black List, although Cassie Pappas will re write it. Ride will chronicle the legendary mission that led Sally Ride to become the first American woman in space.
This is just the latest project for Soloway, whose Transparent won eight Emmy awards during its five season run. She’s already developing a Red Sonja film for Millennium, and is also co-writing the Julianne Moore vehicle Mothertrucker with Taylor Blackburn, based on the true story of Joy Mothertrucker, America’s only female ice road trucker.
Soloway also collaborated with Amazon on another series, I Love Dick, worked on the incredible HBO series Six Feet Under when it was on the air, and directed the underrated indie, Afternoon Delight. So yeah, she’s good.
“Sally Ride is an American hero and icon whose life and career was and is endlessly fascinating and inspirational”, said Nathan Kahane, president of Lionsgate. “In the hands of Jill Soloway and our tremendous team of producers, we feel we have the right storytellers to honour and properly tell Sally’s incredible story”.
It’s unclear what project Soloway will be working on first, but she’s a great fit for Ride. Hopefully the film can eschew the typical beat-for-beat clichés of many biopics and become something truly inspiring.
