As the MCU continues to expand, so does its bevy of a-list stars. Variety reports that Jude Law is in negotiations to play the male lead opposite Brie Larson in the upcoming film, Captain Marvel.
Law is set to play the role of Doctor Walter Lawson, otherwise known as Mar-Vell – the first Captain Marvel. In the comics, Mar-Vell is a Kree sent to spy on Earth to deem if the planet is a threat to the Kree empire. But after he assists the humans too much, he’s found guilty of treason by his own people and sentenced to death, before forcing himself back to earth and dubbing himself Captain Marvel.
Marvel has already confirmed that the film will have the Skrulls as the main antagonists, who in the comics are at odds with the Kree race. Ben Mendelsohn is already on board to play the lead villain of the Skrulls.
Law’s character is set to serve as a mentor to Larson’s, while Samuel L. Jackson will reprise his role as Nick Fury, only this time with both eyes intact, as Captain Marvel will serve as a prequel to the entire MCU.
Got all that? It might sound like directors Anna Boden & Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind) have their work cut out, but this plot is not really any more complex than your average MCU film. The script has been written by Geneva Robertson-Dworet and the film is set to begin shooting next year.
Law joins Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Michael Douglas as recent big-name additions to the most popular superhero cinematic universe. Plus he’s also set to play young Dumbledore in the upcoming Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald, so everything’s coming up Law right now, even moreso than usual.
Captain Marvel is set to arrive in cinemas on March 8, 2019.
