Judy Greer has signed on to for a role in indie drama Mabel. Nicholas Ma, son of famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, will direct the film, which he has co-written alongside Joy Goodwin. Helen Estabrook, Luca Borghesde, and Ben Howe will serve as producers.
The film will focus on Callie, whose only friends are the plants and trees that surround her home. When Callie’s dad moves the family to a sterile subdivision because of his job, she is utterly isolated, except for her best friend – a potted plant named Mabel.
Greer will be playing the mother in a supporting role – unfortunately a position she has occupied an absurd number of times in her recent career. Jurassic World, Ant-Man, Men, Women & Children, The 15:17 To Paris, Tomorrowland, and Buffaloed are just a few films where she’s played a variation on the same role.
No one has been cast as Callie yet, and it will be interesting to see if Mabel is voiced or is merely just your typical plotted plant. This sounds like the kind of film that often becomes a quirky Sundance hit, so don’t be surprised if that’s where it debuts in a year or two.
Greer is currently filming Disney+ film Hollywood Stargirl…where she’ll yet again play the mother of the lead character! Really! She’s also filming Flint Strong, a sports biopic directed by Rachel Morrison in her directorial debut. No word yet on what Greer’s role is in that one.

Actress Lexi Perkel was cast as Callie! The movie is in post-production right now. I hope you’re right about Sundance!
