This month has belonged to Star Wars. In fact, this whole year has belonged to Star Wars. But in the past few days, in the same week The Force Awakens is due for release, Trekkies have had a reason to get excited: the teaser trailer for Star Trek Beyond was released. This is the third film in the rebooted franchise; a franchise that was rebooted by none other than J.J. Abrams, who has now turned to the dark side (or whatever term Trekkies would use) with Star Wars.
Although Abrams has now left Star Trek, he handpicked his successor: Justin Lin. Lin is mostly known for his work on the Fast & Furious movies, yet in a group interview at Paramount Studios, Lin claimed: “He [Abrams] kinda tracked me down and we’re talking and I didn’t know what to expect. I thought maybe he’s offering to go shoot a script that existed, and he said ‘No, it’s yours. Go and be bold, and just take it. Be bold and make it what you think you would do to Star Trek.’” When asked how much his film would incorporate the ground-work of the two previous films, Lin felt that it was a complex issue: “I don’t know if we’re leaving it behind… But you know at the same time Star Trek has been around 50 years and I’m excited to be a part of it but I’m also excited to be a participant but hopefully to see where it’s gonna go, and I think every filmmaker that comes on has a different point of view and it’s a big universe.”
Filling the shoes of J.J. Abrams will be a big ask of Justin Lin, and Star Trek fans will be hoping that his contribution to the franchise can match the success of those that came before. Star Trek Beyond will continue to feature Chris Pine as Captain James T. Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Commander Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty and Karl Urban as Bones, but joining them will be Idris Elba in an unspecified role (probably the baddie). If you haven’t already, check out the teaser trailer below, and expect it to be released July 22, 2016.
