Downton Abbey actress Michelle Dockery has confirmed that her fiancé has passed away aged just 34 years. John Dineen, the director of a PR firm, passed away after a strenuous battle with cancer at a hospice in County Cork, Ireland on December 13. Michelle Dockery is best known for playing Lady Mary in the hugely popular ITV period drama Downton Abbey. Although Dockery and Dineen shared a private relationship, she had revealed in the past that her co-star Allen Leech, who played Tom Branson, introduced her to Dineen. It is also believed that they got engaged earlier this year.

Dockery was due to perform in a revival of Les Liaisons Dangereuses (Dangerous Liaisons), but pulled out without explanation. A spokesperson for the British actress delivered this statement: “The family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private.” John Dineen’s funeral will be held today in County Cork.
