Kaley Cuoco‘s post-Big Bang Theory career is going just fine.
Having already helped make The Flight Attendant into a hit – the series just concluded its second season – and continuing to voice the lead role in the acclaimed Harley Quinn animated series, Cuoco has now signed on to star in Based on a True Story, a dark comedy series in development at Peacock.
The series is true to its title, as it’s based on the true story of a realtor, a plumber, and a faded tennis star who collide in some unexpected and explosive ways. The show will reportedly be a darkly comedic spin on America’s obsession with true crime. Cuoco will play a married woman named Ava Bartlett, although that’s all we know of her role as of right now.
Craig Rosenberg (The Boys) will write, showrun, and executive produce the series, while Jason Bateman and Michael Costigan will also serve as executive producers.
Despite the true crime boom, there haven’t been that many successful shows skewering our obsession with the genre. Netflix’s American Vandal probably did it best before its surprising cancellation. The Kristen Bell-led The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window seemed promising on the surface but failed to deliver.
So Based on a True Story will be looking to fill that hole in the market. Rosenberg has already had success doing something similar to the superhero genre with The Boys, so he’s an excellent fit to be in charge of the project. Bateman also has a good track record in behind-the-scenes roles.
There’s no release date yet for Based on a True Story. Cuoco is currently filming thriller Role Play alongside David Oyelowo, while romantic comedy Meet Cute – which she’s starring in with Pete Davidson – is currently in post-production.
