Kate Winslet Joins James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ Sequels | Film News

With James Cameron making sequels to the highest grossing film of all time, he’s now added a star he worked with on the previous holder of that same record. Twenty years after teaming up on Titanic, Kate Winslet has signed on for Cameron’s Avatar sequels.

Winslet will play a character named Ronal, though there’s currently no details on the character nor how many films Winslet will be appearing in. Cameron said: “Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career. I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life”.

Production finally kicked off on the sequels in late September, with the second and third films shooting concurrently with plans to get 4 and 5 underway shortly thereafter. The films have recently been confirmed to be the most expensive movies of all time, with a reported budget of $250 million each.

While Cameron has taken an inordinate amount of time to get these sequels together, and it’s debatable whether there’s a big enough audience for them to justify anything close to that price tag, he usually finds a way to bring us something visually dazzling. Adding Winslet to the mix is an added bonus as Cameron hopes to sway audiences back into paying excessive amounts to visit Pandora.

Winslet will next be seen opposite Idris Elba in thriller The Mountain Between Us, which arrives in cinemas this week, while the first Avatar sequel is currently scheduled to hit cinemas on December 18, 2020.
