Kathryn Hahn To Play Lead In ‘Tiny Beautiful Things’ Series Adaptation

Hulu have announced that they are developing a series adaptation of Tiny Beautiful Things, based on Cheryl Strayed‘s 2012 novel of the same name. The show will be a half-hour comedy series, and the streamer have already secured their star: Kathryn Hahn.

Strayed’s book is a collection of essays and writings from the writer’s time as an advice columnist for The Rumpus. She wrote under the pen name Sugar, and many of her responses were honest and based on her own life experiences. The novel was previously adapted into a 2016 play as well.

Hahn is always a super fun screen presence who has really made TV her world over the last few years. In 2019 she starred in acclaimed HBO miniseries Mrs. Fletcher, before playing a key role on drama I Know This Much Is True. She then wowed audiences with her turn as Agatha Harkness in last year’s WandaVision.

She also had a role in black comedy series The Shrink Next Door, and voices a lead role on Loren Bouchard‘s (Bob’s Burgers) other animated show, Central Park. Both of those projects were for Apple TV+. Hahn also has her WandaVision spin-off, Agatha: House Of Harkness, in the works for Disney+. She’ll also be seen in Knives Out 2, her first on-screen film role since 2018.

Liz Tigelaar, who previously worked on an another literary adaptation for Hulu with Little Fires Everywhere, will serve as the series creator and executive producer. Hahn will also executive produce alongside big names such as Reese Witherspoon, Laura Dern, and Lauren Neustadter. So it’s safe to say that Tiny Beautiful Things is in good hands.

This adaptation of the book has actually been a long time coming. Witherspoon and Dern originally tried to get the project going at HBO all the way back in 2015, with the same creative team attached, but the deal fell through.

Witherspoon’s involvement makes sense as she previously starred in 2014 film Wild, which itself was an adaptation of Strayed’s memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail. Dern also had a supporting role in the movie.

Craig Erwich, President of ABC Entertainment and Hulu Original Chief, said in a statement:

“As we emerge from a pandemic during which stories like those told in Tiny Beautiful Things helped us feel a sense of community and camaraderie at a moment we most needed it, this is a prescient story to be able to tell at this moment in time and we’re grateful to be able to tell it.”

Hopefully the series adaptation is worth the long wait it has taken it to get to the small screen. Now we wait and see how Strayed’s collection of essays is adapted into a comedy series.
