Dreamworks’ Kung Fu Panda 3 was the number one film in the US this weekend, becoming the first animated film to rule the box office listings since the release of Hotel Transylvania 2. The third film in the Kung Fu Panda series earned an approximate $4.1 million, making it the biggest debut of 2016 so far.

However the third notch on the series belt could not match the original, which was released back in 2008, earning $60.2 million in the US and $631.7 million worldwide. The new release pushed down The Revenant and Star Wars: The Force Awakens to second and third respectively.
